General Discussion / Re: Message From Track Trailer

well, are we really surprised, I have been dealing with track for almost ten years and had had 2 topaz vans,2012 model and now 2018.for the first few years they were a really great company to deal with, great on the phone and quick to answer emails.
but that all changed and if you weren't spending 100k plus with them they just didn't want to know you. Hardly ever returned your call because they never answered it in the first place, emails were few and far between and i even had one guy blame me for a problem they were warned about but ignored.my 2018 van is plagued with build quality issues, but even when it was under warranty, they still refused to talk about it.
they just got too big for their boots and just didn't care about customer service, just focused on the big bucks.the only reason i still have my van is i can't afford a new one at this stage, but once i can i will never buy track again...

Topaz Topaz / Re: Topaz roof sealant

hi fantum,

so, i have replaced the sealant on both the topaz vans i have owned. so, use a high-quality urethane, like sika flex or bostik. if you can buy the sausage style cartridge, not the standard caulking style. you will need  to buy at least 3 .
silicone won't work as well as urethane. the biggest setback is that the urethane is not u/v stable and will break down after about 4 years, quicker if it's in the sun most of the time.

to protect the sealant from over exposure i did one of two things. on my first 2012 van i laid a strip of 50mm wide and 3 mm thick aluminium over the sealant when it was still wet and put weights on top of it over night. then next day i went around the edges and sealed the strip down.

but on my current 2018 model i have decided to paint over the sealant with a uv stable paint. i used a marine grade 2 part under coat and tomorrow i will paint over it with the uv stable paint. but you could also use a uv stable rubberised paint, a bit like a bitumastic paint, but i couldn't find any in white, just black.

so i hope this helps , good luck and enjoy getting sealant all over yourself...

thanks for the input guys, i have used it again and put the multi meter on it to check how low the volts dropped . only happens when the batteries are at about 12.5v ,anything above that and it works well. i might look into new lithium batteries soon..cheers chris

Topaz Topaz / webasto diesel hot water system
December 27, 2022, 09:42:56 PM
hi all, i have a 2018 topaz with the diesel hot water system. it starts, lasts about 30 seconds then stops. switch it off wait and try again, lasts about 30 seconds then switch's off. The only time it works is when the car is running, or we have good solar. batteries read about 12.3v-12.5v and close to 14v with the car running. i have looked online but can't find anything about this fault. the batteries are about 2 years old and have solar hooked up when the van is not in use. anybody have this happen to them.

hi guys .

looks like track trail don't really care about back up sales . i sold my 2012 topaz and bought a 2018 topaz last year. the door was looked but not the compression locks . the door flew open on the freeway and is now buggered. that happen in September. i was told its not a design fault ,so no warranty .
a new door was ordered via insurance , low and behold ,still not here. got an email from them last month . mind you i did have to ring several times and get nasty .

if your not spending 100k plus on a new unit , they just don't want to know you .

i have 3 soon to retire friends looking at getting small vans , told them all to look elsewhere.

hey topaz owner,
the fusion in our 2018 topaz stopped working as well over x-mas. looking online they recommend holding the power button for 10 seconds to reset the unit or removing the power source for several minutes , i tried these and nothing worked, for a radio that has been sitting in a van under full cover all its life i am not overly impressed. but then again this is my second topaz and i am not overly impressed with the van or the company track trailer.

RTM have fusion radios for sale that will fit straight in they coast $399.00

lets us know if you get it to work.

hi treme,

i had used the sausage style cartridges not the rigid standard tubes , the sausage style ones are a little bigger than the tubes and i used 2 tubes. but i had filled the gap between the outer roof frame and the inner panels with sikaflex first . then applied the high grade product over the top and to make it even more U/V protected i covered the area with 50mm wide aluminium strip.

hey rob,
i live in buderim as well , if you ever want to catch up for a coffee just sing out . i have just returned from a 4 week trip into the N.T , our topaz suffered greatly from dust ingress , so i have for the last 3 weeks been dealing with that ,but thats a different story . like i said , after i had applied the sealant that i got from track trailer .i then fitted a 50mm wide 3mm thick aluminium strip over the sealant . this will protect it from the U.V . plus while sealing up the van for dust , i got a body spray gun and re-coated under the wheel arches and did the front stone shield in 'textured stone guard' .so my next step for the roof is to clean it and spray the sealand with white stone guard ,plus i sealed the two joins that go across the roof ,just to be sure..

after seeing the work the professionals did in the building of our topaz , i guessed that i could do better ,why ,because i want the job done for me , they do the job for someone else and dont really care.

good luck cheers chris

hey paul2, that's the same problem i had , more sealant next to the gap and very little sealant over the gap. the other thing i did was i got a paint scraper and with an angle grinder shaped it so it would fit in the grove that holds most of the sealant, then i made the scraper razor sharp and kept sharpening it as i went along , i scraped out 90% of all the sealant ,then used the wire wheel to get the rest. i did the whole roof because if you dont do it all now,you will be chasing your tail in the future. that's also the reason for the 50 mm cover strip . most sealants are not u/v stable and will break down again over time , but the cover strip protects from the u/v . once i had finished the main roof ,i then cleaned the two cross braces with metho and ran a bead of sealant along both edges, just to be sure they were not leaking.

i also don't understand how track trailer expected the sealant to hold ,considering that 90% of the sealant was next to the gap that needed sealing ,

just remembered ,that once i had the whole roof cleaned up and the gap cleared of old sealant , i went around and filled the gap with sealant as well , then applied the sealant over the top , sounds like a lot of work but i didn't  want to be doing it again soon....cheers chris

hey paul2 ,

i had same problem with the old sealant going dusty and brittle. i decided to do the whole roof from scratch. so i scraped out all the old sealant and then used a wire wheel on a drill and removed the left overs ,this also etched the aluminium for a better bond. i got the same sealant that track trailer use and proceeded to reseal the roof, i did one side at ta time and before the sealant could set ,i placed a 50mm wide strip of aluminium over the top and pressed it down with bricks . i had cut the aluminium to size beforehand. after i had done all 4 joins i waited 24 hours then i ran a bead of sealant along the edges of the aluminium . now not only is the roof sealed ,but the aluminium acts as a cover for the sealant so it doesn't get sun damaged. like happy traveler said wash with metho to clean the area..
if i were you i would do the solar panels at the same time while your up there ...

good luck chris

hey guys ,thanks for the input. its definitely a leak  ,actually several, as I was washing the van down and noticed them. then last night it rained and they leaked again. I believe you are right about the sealant braking down over time . I was chatting to a panel beater and he said I could look at cleaning the roof properly maybe even give it a hit with some 800 grit and then paint the whole roof with a white paint called , stone guard, its basically a flexible hard wearing coating.

ill keep an eye on it for now and do some more research..
