Easy tow ball camera
« on: February 05, 2012, 08:08:17 PM »
I came across this free app http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/remote-live-camera/id347230105?mt=8 that allows you to stream video via Bluetooth between iOS devices.  With a iPhone attached to the rear window via a suction mount you can stream the view of your tow ball.  Because the video stream is over Bluetooth the image is quite jerky but if you back up slowly it allows you line up safely & efficiently.  I've tested the system using an iPhone 4 and a 4S as the source camera, & both iPhones & an iPad 2 as receiving camera.  I've attached some pictures to demonstrate the set up.

Nice idea to replace the number plate light with a camera & good price. If you use one do you have issues with parallax as the camera is not in the mid-line? For just now I am happy to use gadgets I already own & not to have to hard-wire anything into the vehicle at this stage. For a complete package I like the look of the trailair system that has been released in the UK (www.landrovertrailair.co.uk/).  It's not yet available in Aus & expect the price will be spectacular! Might try & get a UK relative to source me one...

For those with a recent Prado, we found out at the Jugiong meet last month, that there is an easy way to slightly change the "angle" of the reversing camera so that you can see the tow ball. It's a matter of scratching away a tiny piece of the plastic under the camera & presto there's the tow ball.
