WHO HAS SEEN AN 'EAGLE'?
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:21:11 PM »
The poor old Eagle section looks so alone with no postings to date so I thought I'd put paid to that with a question.  I have never seen a TT Eagle - can somebody post a photo or two please and give a brief overview on the unit?  I assume it is no longer being made?

Thanks Andrew ... I should have realised there might be somethin on the TT site - I thought it might have been a current prodcut but couldn't find it there.  Thanks.
Gordon.

I've seen a couple of pics somewhere but they were small and exterior shots only. Would love to see more.

Thanks guys for your responses – I am pleased I posed the question as I now know a heck of a lot more about the Eagle.  Seems as though the same degree of innovation and dedication to quality from Track that we see in the current crop of Tvans & Topaz, also went into the Eagle.

Gordon.. and others who may be interested..

You might be interested to know the name ‘Eagle’ for the ‘flip over the side’ tent campers was only given to them not long before the release of the Tvan, in the late 1990’s.

For the first 15 years or so they were simply known as ‘Track Trailer Campers’.

Initially the camper top only was produced (no trailer)..  The idea being you could fit the camper top onto any 6 x 4 trailer, but trailer failures were giving the product a bad name, even though they weren’t part of the product package.

From about the mid 1980’s to about 2000 the camper tops were built onto three different types of trailers, which became (unofficially) known as - Type 1 - Type 2 - Type 3 - trailers.
Production of trailer top campers stopped soon after the Tvan was in full production.

There were also a number of butterfly tops fitted onto trailers (gear carriers).
There’s a picture of a Type 3 (MC 2 suspension) butterfly top gear carrier on the history page link - in the first reply above.

Jim

This is a camper on a Type 3 trailer (MC 2 suspension) - with a slightly wonky tent..

Jim is pretty well on the money.

The Type 1 was built on a Guiding Star trailer which had (from what I've been told) 60 series leaf springs and a live axle. It was one of the first camper trailers to use long leaf eye to eye springs for a better off-road ride and durability when most others were still using short slipper springs. Up to approx. '92 or '93.

Type 2 was built using Sugarglider coil spring, trailing arm suspension (made in Heidelberg, Melbourne to this day) which is used under many other trailers such as Ultimate and has been copied by many other manufacturer over the years. From what I understand Alan helped refine the design with the guys from Sugarglider. Sugar glide and Guidingstar trailers used 1400kg axles and AlKo on-road brakes (all that was available at the time). Up to approx. '95.

Type 3 runs the same familiar suspension as the Tvan currently does, which was developed in house by Alan and the team at Track in the mid 90's. Until production ceased due to declining sales and cost factors in 2001. Type 3 chassis' used newly developed (with the help of Alan and Track) AlKo off-road brakes and mostly 1600kg axles. Tvans and Type 3 suspension is interchangeable (except for a spring seat position change on the RHS in early 2006).

All models feature much the same box arrangement (slight size and shape differences can really on be spotted side by side or by tragics like me).

Most were Transformer Grey in colour like the one in the photo but the very late models ones were a beige colour.

Eagles (as they are now all referred to around the company regardless of vintage) were designed and built using the same riveted sheet metal style as used in the Tvan (or should that be the other way around!).

The gear carrying trailers were variously known as Oasis and Mirage depending on configuration.

Isn't it amazing how things work?

I'd never seen an Eagle, then I read about them in this thread, and blow me down if I don't see one today down in Busselton WA.

It was a Type 2 going from Huey's description, and is for sale at the Caravan Doctors.

Didn't ask how much but apparently the previous owner has bought a new Tvan or Topaz.

So there you go.

Transformer Grey is a Dulux powdercoat colour. It is so called because many transformers and electrical switch boxes are powdercoated that colour, just look around any factory and you'll find many of the electrical panel boxes and their doors are the same colour as the Eagle.

My Eagle,

Somewhat modified ;-)

Also extended the draw bar 500mm which makes a world of difference to handling.

I had a 1997 Eagle with MC 2 suspension, into opinion they would have to be the best soft floor camper ever built, by a country mile!
