Guys
I have been looking at the snow peak fire pits from drift and I am thinking of getting one and maybe get rid of the Oz pig.
Wondering any of you got one of these fire pits .
If so what is your thoughts to use it for cooking.
What size do you have.

I do like our Oz pig but it has its problems and these new fire pits look good , but just wondering if anyone can comment.
Cheers kangyboy.

Tht snow peak looks ok but has 2 major problems.

1)It is *(&$ing expensive for what it is.
2)The shape, while flat is not very friendly.

I looked at similar things a while ago and decided I would get something like this but then went cold on the whole idea.

It is more solid, easy to setup and pack away, a good packed shape, and as a bonus has a spit function.

It is on ebay. There were similar ones on ebay without the spit function for about $80 but I can't find them right now.

I purchased one of the above.
Use it for both campfire and cooking with a cookstand
Works well for me and packs quite easily into the side locker
Be interested to also hear about the snowpeak as I only spotted it online recently

The Hillbilly fire tray is fantastic - so simple to carry, set-up, use and pack-up.  Put the 'wok lid' on for overnight and the fire quickly extinguishes, but then very easy to get going again in the morning :)

Mmmm
I have several hillbilly camping products but never seen this before.
How flat does it fold?

Boobook that looks the goods , price at $170 is getting up there compare the Drifts one.

I may see what some 3 to 4mm steel plate weights in at and price to have laser cut me thinks around the $50 mark.
Stainless might also work this concept with a couple rib folds for strength.

Nee dot re think that one.
The Anaconda one although looks ok and price well storing it is an issue.
Cheers for the thoughts and replies.

Hillbilly is less than six inches thick when packed away in supplied bag. Unscrew coach bolts, lay base inside wok lid, sit both on top of egg-ring (so that bulk sits inside ring) then slide into bag. Simple.
And, you can slip the lid underneath when fire in use.

Can I clarify . The one you have is the $65ebay one plus $38 postage.
If so what exactly does I come with ? Does it include the handle grill and mesh.
Is it all that heavy.
Cheers Kangyboy.

Hi Kangyboy,

I have seen the Pig in situ at a long stay camp and really like what I saw - be interested in the 'problems' it has as I do have one on my wish list.

Cheers

Hi Derek

Firstly let me say , the OZ PIG is a good bit of kit for what its really designed for in my opinion.
Its big benefits are the enclosed features it has ie a pot belly stove, and with the bent chimney its great when raining if you are under an awning and want to cook or keep warm.
We have used it to bbq on and also use it with camp oven. Check out this link to our website blog.
http://www.grantandlinda.wordpress.com/our-setup/camping/

That all said it does store away neatly into a bag about the size of a 9kg gas bottle .
It is weighty and weights  in around 17kg , and you do need to have the ability to cut wood up into the right size to fit into the belly, and to make it really work like any combustion heater DRY RED GUM is the go, so in most  cases you need to carry wood with you of the right size and shape.
It works well when used for this and most places some  National Parks  &Caravan Parks are ok with it, as it does have a spark arrestor and I use a catch tray it sits on . So when stopped for a while we will make a day of camp oven cooking from breads to  scones,  cakes,  stews , to a roast and finish of with port wine banana pudding thus filling the fridge and pantry for a couple days.

BUT THESE DAYS  we find ourselves with our new venture ( see the blog new) we are on the go daily punching out the kms, we stop for camp about 4pm set up dinner a fire to relax with and then off to bed and hit the road again 6am next morning , so we want something we can use quickly , anywood will do, can cook on it if necessary and pack away quickly next morning , store flat and not to heavy and not take up much room. Hence my question on firepits as I saw a snowpeak but wasn't really sure, but I think I like the one Boobook has suggested and some others that have it.

Hope that's go to explaining my reason.

Cheers Kangyboy

Go  the snow peak , we bought one, if you buy one but a large one with the accessories. It such good quality, folds down very flat, doesn"t need much wood .You get what  you pay for, we love it

Hi Kangy,

Thank you for the comprehensive follow-up and explanation.

I do agree the 'pig' is more a long stay item rather than a short stay item and this is where I have seen it in all it's glory.

Mates of mine each have a pig when the set up their camp for the long haul (3 months) and use it extensively on the cool nights both for cooking and also warming the gazebo they set up. (I do call their camp sites palaces - but that is a story for another day)

The bulk and weight of the pig are issues we have identified - we bring our own wood so we can benefit from the pig and find the bags of firewood are a pretty good size for the pig. We tend to cheat a bit here and buy a few nags of wood so there is no mess in the car, besides it is easier and quicker paying $15/bag than going and collecting wood around here.

PS - great blog
