Next mod is to reduce the size of the table, it is just too big and heavy, so the plan (is apt to change) is to replace the top with a nice dressed and varnished piece of pine at about 400x600mm.

Should give us a bit more room to move whilst still being usable for the two of us.

With regard to the replacement table and after a bit of checking I’ve settled on a piece of laminated pine 450x650mm Nd finished in clear satin varnish, I’ll finish fitting the mount tomorrow and it will be all done.

no trouble at all, only 6 small screws holding the bracket to the heavy metal/wood table top, unscrewed them and screwed them to the new table top, easiest part of the whole job.

My most recent favorite Mod, isn't a mod to the van per se, but rather to something I carry, seeming we have four jerry can holders on the front of the van I found that I didn't need all of them for water or fuel, and seeming that I had a Jerry Can that didn't seal properly (I loaned it to someone and they bent the arm of the cap by mistake)....

... So anyway my brother being the hands-on type has taken the leaking Jerry can and converted it into a rubbish bin that can be placed on one of the holders, very cool, and took him an hour all up to do...

Only thing left to do is to get a bit of protective stripping for around the edge and it is all done.

Gryphon, uselful mod, I’m always fiddling with rubbish bins. Can you pls pose pics of where you have your Jerry cans mounted on front of van. I currently used the large RH side compartment for my Jerry cans

Use pinchweld from around the opening of a car door.
For the edges of the can that are cuts.
Car wrecker is a good place to start.
Usually something that gets binned.
Might even be some with a rubber seal incorporated in the design.

I was thinking of the Aluminium Pinchweld, I used that previously on the edge of a Jerry Can holder on my old Camper Trailer and it never came loose, but admittedly you had to bash it on a bit with a hammer lol

Fitted the gas strut to the rear storage, with all the info and advice from IsuzuTopaz it was an all up 10 minute job, very relaxed and no blood loss

Hi Gryphen, don't want to hijack this thread but would like to know what sort of fuel economy you get with the FJ, in off road situations. Thanks in advance for any reply. Gibbo

Depends on the ‘off road’ if its soft sand it will chew a fair bit of juice but if its gravel and track it stays reasonable.

As an example towing the Topaz halfway around Australia with a mix of track, gravel and blacktop we averaged 18L/100

Normally city I get somewhere from12 to 14 but on the beach I’ve seen it do 23...

Does that help?
