It's tight if you leave the tent packed up and shut the hatch. There's not a lot of room left at the hatch end of the bed but it is dry. You also need to carry a couple of pad locks so nobody can 'accidentally' lock you in. I have a couple to secure the van when it's packed up and you could use those to stop the latch being closed completely.

But we also got the option of the canvas hatch cover instead of the standard fly screen and that makes a nice privacy screen with the hatch up. Great for a quick stop over.

I like the idea of quick set up canvas hatch cover. Did you get it made?

Nice one RAR110.  We had our first trip in ours this weekend.  It's so very civilised and very comfortable.  Was very cold but we were snug and warm.  Setup and pack up is dead easy even when putting up the big awning.  Bit crowded though with three kids sleeping on the deck but perfectly workable for a few years until we can boot them out into their own tent. Might have to invest in the family room. Ensure tent is very good if you have one.

I now have lots of little jobs to do to make it work better for us. Will take a few goes to work out where to stow all our gear.

 You will love it.

Ta Rod. Did you go with the bunk option for the kids?

The canvas hatch cover is an upgrade option you can get when ordering your Tvan and has a fly wire screen with a canvas cover, similar to the tent windows. Trak would sell them separately but I'm not sure of the price.

No bunks.  My kids are still little so we just got a queen mattres the fits the deck nicely.  Three fit on there easily. Just more hassle for us walking on the mattress and not stepping on the kids.

We may go with the bunk if we get sick of the mattress. But I am hoping they will want their own tent in a year or two.

as Gumb said...LOL. We have used the canvas hatch cover, with the hatch itself just pulled down half way to shade to and add a little privacy.
Just make sure you crack open the roof vents, if you close the hatch, though..it IS air tight in there :D

Re closing the hatch while inside:
I had the experience of the hatch coming down and the latch locking under its hook and the locking lever being jammed against the metal beside the locking hook.
Luckily we weren't inside at the time!
Don't know how it happened, but it has scared me.
I had to use quite a bit of force to get the lever to move.
We always use the lynch pin to lock the lever in place when opening the hatch since that incident.

Can both the hatch canvas and drop down canvas be fitted to create two rooms?

Unfortunately no. They both have a bungy that stretches around the "mouth" of the Tvan and it would be extremely difficult to stretch the tent bungy around the mouth if the hatch canvas was already in place.
You can however put a curtain across the back of the Tvan to separate the bed area from the tent. Hopefully someone on here will have done that and can explain better or put up a picture to show how they attached the curtain. I am told a curtain makes it much warmer in bed but we haven't tried it
Cheers

If it's really cold we hang a single woolen blanket over the hatch opening which is held on by three small spring clamps you can buy at any cheap variety shop. It does make a difference when it's really cold. That only works when you have the full tent up of course. The quick hatch cover would do the same job but won't be as effective since it's exposed to the outside air on one side.
