I need to add an anderson plug power connection to my Patrol for the Tvan and hoped I could get some advice:

what rating is the standard Tvan anderson plug?
what size cable should I use from the vehicle battery?
what size fuse should I use?
is there a recommended method of connecting this to avoid flattening all of the batteries etc?

I assume that this connection will also charge the on-board battery

Thanks for any assistance

No connection, just a customer etc.

50 Amp Anderson Plug.

Use 6B&S cable.

50 Amp Fuse.

If you have a dual battery setup in the vehicle just connect directly to the auxiliary battery. If not, you will need to install some type of isolation to prevent flattening a main battery. There are numerous options one of which would be a Redarc SBi12.

I have used a few different brands of anderson plugs eg Lichen, KST, Narva, and Anderson and just recently bought some Sidewinder on line and haven't had any problem with any of them yet, but they are not used very often.  Would you say that just Sidewinder are cheap and nasty (6 for $36, or 10 for $20 (not incl postage) or are they all cheap and nasty except for the original Anderson brand.  Singly, you can pay anything from  around $5 to nearly $20 for anderson type plugs and I figure that $20 is paying too much.

I bought a heap of cheap ones on eBay a long time ago and use them for everything

I must have been one of the lucky ones I have not had any issues with them

G'day,
Not answering the question but I've bought a stack of ABR Sidewinder 50 amp plugs and converted pretty much everthing to them and am very happy. My connection is exactly the system Leachy wrote up.

I have replace a couple of plugs that did crack as per the photos, i dont know about the not joining properly.  I put the cracking down to supporting the cable during a Canning trip.

One thing I always carry is spare ones, along with a crimper and solder, so if they do fail it is a just a quick fix.

BTW the original TVan plug was pulled out by grass on the track and i replaced it with the one that cracked

Thanks guys for the info.
I do have an auxiliary battery with an isolator setup so Leachy's proposal would be relatively easy.
Has anyone tried connecting it via a relay switched by the ignition? this would leave the connector isolated when the engine is off.

If you fit a relay to turn the Anderson Plug on and off with the ignition.
You lose the use of it when the vehicle is not running.
Some of us have modified the lead for the air compressor we carry, just so we can use that socket.
It makes it easier to do all the tyres, Trailer included, without having a 30Mtr. air hose to carry as well.

I do the same above no relay just a fuse
Remember you already have or should have a relay between your main and acc battery so it won't drain your starting battery

I use the Anderson plug for connecting my solar to put power in and I use it for my air compressor and I have an extension cable that I use to plug in the camper when it is not connected to the car so the car battery can get charged via the battery charger on the topaz when we do those horrible over might stops at caravan parks

Hi I have used genuine 50A Andersons and picked them up at reasoable price on ebay. Have one on aux batt under the bonnet for solar panel. Another is wired from start batt via 30amp fuse to rear of Patrol. I am connecting a REDARC BCDC1220 on the TVAN to charge 2 x 100Ah Batts via the TVAN Anderson connector and the BCDC isolates from Start batt.

Like your idea of Anderson for compressor might do that. I have used one for my inverter so I can use on vehicle or TVAN.

yes, I also modified the end of my arb compressor (grey tool box style) power lead - used two anderson plugs, so can still attach and use the battery clamps on vehicles that don't have a handy anderson plug outlet - of course, need to keep the fuse on the compressor side of the join :)
