Thank you for sharing your awning with all us Baron. It's is just the perfect setup for the tvan. I knew there had to be a better and simple way to replace the sail awning - but I did not have the ability to come up with a design.

I am interested to know a couple of things from yourself and others that have used your design:
(I have a Mk2 tvan)

* have you used a particular brand of side awning??
* would an existing side awning people might have be suited for fitting to the tvan?
* what size awning did you fit??
* will it still be possible to easily fit the awning on my vehicle if I wanted to (we may have occasion where we are staying put somewhere with the tvan and have the full awning up - but would like to use the awning on our vehicle - either for extra shade or when out tripping around in the vehicle.
* If I was using the side awning for overnight stops - but wanted to get somewhere and put up the full awning for an extended stay perhaps.  What would I do with the side awning?? Can it be left on the tvan (2004 Mk2) and still be able to put up the full awning or would I need to remove it?

Looking forward to your feedback
Cheers
Ruth

Hi, and thanks for your questions / comments ...

Most brands, such as ARB, Oztrail, Tigerz, TJM, etc will fit.  It will not take a Foxwing.

If you already have on of the correct length on your vehicle, it will be a simple matter of moving it over.

It needs a 2.5metre or larger ... Most people have a 2.5metre.

You can transfer the awning to your vehicle by undoing a couple of nuts.

You can still put the full TVAN Annexe up over the top of the awning, if it is a 2.5metre awning..

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Baron

Guys Got a Birthday around the corner ,
So I am interested in getting one of these side awnings set ups so many of you have.

But before I go ahead can I ask of you all a couple questions.
In our case our second Home is the Kimberley and particularly the GRR and all its corrigations.
To date the Tvan and Pajero have had no issues nor has the paj side awning, other than the occasional checking of the the attachment brackets , but some loc tight seems to have solved that.

Question
1) How well does the awning stay attached when on really corrugated roads ? Do the brackets and attachments hold up ok , no sign of fatigue or stress anywhere?

2) I am worried with all the movement does the awning rub against the fibre glass or the window in the fold up position when travelling?

3) Does the Kit come with the awning ?

4) If not what has everyone found to be the best awning to buy.

5) As I have a front box I am worried how much clearance do I need to what was the grab handle threaded holes? ie how thick does the bracket protrude off the tvan.

Hope some of you that have the awning won't mind sharing your thoughts and experiences.
Regards Kangyboy Kelly.

Hi All
My wife and I have just finished the install of a 2.5m x 3.0 m awning using the fantastic braket setup from Baron, Thanks Baron, for yours and Connies time on Xmas eve as we were passing through Melbourne on our xmas trip, Mungo nat park, Grampians, Alpine Nat park where we did the Wonnongata loop track, Towing the tvan up Billy goats bluff was a fun day, Kosiosko then Snowey river then the Blue mountains

I digress from the subject,

we have purchased a Gcamp 2.5m x 3.0m awning with Mosquito net, we have cut a hole in the mosquito net  Cathy sewed the edges and these slide nicely into the grove between the locker and body allowing us to open the Kitchen slide while still fully protected.

With the 3.0m we can set up our table and chairs while still using the whole kitchen setup

The brackets are of a great standard and fitted to our Mk11 Tanami limited edition with front fridge slide with out any modifications, we had to leave off the grab handle on the front as with the fridge it was too hard to get my fat hands in

We still have our 2.5 x 2.5 ,m awning on our Patrol giving us 2 living areas from the flys or mossies

In reading your thread it sounds like it has worked our well for ya , would be interested in seeing a pic  if ya have one , but I think I get the image of what you have done.
Can I ask a question, when the awning is packed away and you where travelling doing all the tracks etc, does the awning rub against the Tvan or its window , OR does it sit away fro the  body of the tvan.
No one has mentioned how it travels when it closed up, I am interested to hear from anyone that has one.
Thanks Kangyboy Kelly.

Hi Kangyboy,

I have just fitted a side awning to our MkII Tvan using Baron's brackets.
I chose to use a 2.5m Supapeg Stand Easy Deluxe Awning because of their quality. The Supapeg awnings have different hole centres and captive bolts for attaching the awning, so I fabricated my own attachment plates to suite.
We have only used it for one trip and haven't driven any corrugated roads, but my assessment thus far is that the amount a flex / movement in the front bracket could lead to failure if you were to travel places such as Drysdale - Kulumbaru or the CSR.
When in travel mode the awning sits away from the side of the Tvan with no rubbing. Even if the awning was to shake on corrugations it would only hit the stainless steel D-Ring above the kitchen.
The design of the front bracket / pole would not work with your front box. I'm not sure if Baron has a design that works with the MKIII Tvan fitted with a front box.

On the whole we are very pleased with the brackets and awning setup. But since my next project is to add a front box I will need to come up with a solution front bracket.

Andrew

Gidday Andrew .

Thanks for the feedback. Where there is a will there will be a way.  It s good to know that rubbing against the Tvan body / windows isn't a problem . Had a bad past experience with a jayco unit with the end fly rubbing the body.
Re racket design , I need to discuss with the guys if we can make it work and perhaps use the strength that's in the box to overcome attachment issues and perhaps improve rigidity.
I still need my boss to come around to my way of thinking as she is all about style and street appeal. Where as me its about functionality and design for fitment of use.
Anyway like I said thanks  for the feedback.
Kangyboy.

Baron, I have been following this thread on the forum with great interest. How would one go about getting hold of the bracket and swinging arm setup for your quick set up awning mod? I have a MKII Canning and I live in Sydney.

wolfgirlkitty

Hi Plynch1949 ... drop us your phone number via private message, and we can give you a call, or alternatively, give Baron a call on 0425 710 512 after 6pm, and he can give you all the details.  Thanks, Connie

Kangyboy , I have one of Barons first kits and have not had any issues with rubbing on the body.
I have traveled through Cameron corner,  Simpson desert, Hay river track and cape york .  The only issue we had was a few bolts coming loose, but this was quickly fixed without any stress.
I have traveled the Kimberley including GRR and Kalumbaru road and couldnt see any reason not to take a Tvan with one of these awnings.
since getting ours we have never used the original awning, it now has a home on the shelf in the shed.

We've had ours on for a few years now, and have done lots and lots of corrugations throughout the centre and various other areas.  We have had no problems with bolts, or anything else, coming loose ... or anything rubbing on the camper.  Like anything else, when you do alot of rough roads, it doesn't hurt to check and tighten things (when required), we all do that with other parts of the car and camper ... preventative maintenance is the key !!!

If you need a few people to purchase these brackets to make it worthwhile manufacturing them, then you can count me in as well. Just let me know the cost!
